Wake up wake up! Rise and shine! We had a month-long slumber with Roger Federer taking time off post the Australian Open and Davis Cup. But the wait is now (almost) over as the Dubai Duty Free ATP 500 Tournament kicks off tomorrow so I’m back too 😀
Dubai is the first of four tournaments Roger is scheduled to play in a row. After Dubai, it will be 2 Masters Tournaments back to back with Indian Wells and Miami and then finishing it off with the Davis Cup QFs back home in Switzerland. After that he will take another month-long break before joining the tour mid-clay season in Madrid. But that’s way into the future so let’s not talk about that any more. For now, we know Roger’s first match is tomorrow. i.e. Monday, February 24th at 7:00pm local time.
Roger is defending SF points from last year. His potential path to the finals is as follows: R1 – Becker; R2 – Stepanek/Russel; QF – Rosol/Tursunov/Brands; SF – Djokovic; F – Del Potro/Berdych/Tsonga. Much analysis has already been made of the draw in many other tennis sites and blogs. However I will not be doing any of that. I have attached the draw for your convenience so feel free to make your own assessments. For me, what works instead, especially since last year, is to take it one match at a time and in this case, his first match will be against the German player Benjamin Becker. He is ranked 93 in the world and is 2 months older than the Maestro. Roger’s H2H with him is 3:0 and you can see the details below.Well that’s it for now. I’ll be back after the first match is done and dusted 🙂 But before I leave, I have a few nuggets of fun things that happened during this relatively quiet off-season. First here are some video clips for you. This is the new hilarious Gillette ad with Roger and football superstar Lionel Messi, with a clip of the fun behind the scenes and a special Messi-Cam behind the scenes too 😀 Within days of the Gillette ad, the new Credit Suisse ad and its behind the scenes clip was posted as well. These ads were launched during the off-season giving us fans a bit of Roger to fangirl over plus we also got a sneak peak at the outfit he will be wearing at Indian Wells and Miami in the Credit Suisse ad.
Roger also did an impromptu and nostalgic #AskRF on twitter on Valentine’s Day, without the hashtag but basically answering his fans who posted old and funny photos of him and took him down memory lane. He cracked his usual brand of dad-jokes at his own expense and showed again why he is the Hashtag King 😉 Check his timeline for all the fun! Roger was also quite active on twitter during the Sochi Winter Olympics cheering on his fellow Swiss Olympians.
Last but not the least, here’s a bit of trivia: this first match in Dubai will be Roger’s 1,150th career match. That would put him 65 matches behind Vilas in 4th place; Lendl is at 2nd and Connors is at 1st with 1,531 career matches.
Can’t wait to see the Maestro play! It’s been sooooooo long! Ummm, well actually it’s only been 3 weeks but you know what I mean! Allez Roger!
