Roger Federer and the Case of the Forgotten Match Point

federerThis will be a super short report in the interest of time. Roger Federer is through to the Halle final! Hmm, maybe that’s enough of a headline to stop right here 😀 Federer took out Kei Nishikori in hard-fought straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(7-4) in 73 minutes.

In my last report I mentioned that Federer would have to serve very well and capitalize on any break point opportunities he might get to secure the win; he did that and more. The Halle surface is fast and low-bouncing which enabled a lot of service winners and short creative rallies, i.e. what Roger does best. The first set was tight but Roger seemed to be in control the entire time especially after he got the crucial break in the 6th game. While Kei continued to serve well too, he never let the Japanese get a look at his serve and saved the one break point he offered.

In the second set, Roger broke Kei right away. Sensing danger, Kei upped the ante and got the break back immediately with some winners of his own and a few errors from the Swiss. From then on, both players held comfortably as the match progressed at lightening pace and got to 4 all. Roger made a few bad errors in Kei’s service game that allowed Nishikori to hold easily and go up 5-4* with Roger having to serve to stay in the set. 2 great serves from Roger helped him equal the score at 5 all but before you could blink, Kei held to love and it was up to Roger to take the set to a dreaded tie-break. He might have been a bit nervous as he hit a double-fault. Nonetheless, he held and we were into the tie-break.

Roger got a mini-break but immediately gave it back. Right before the change of ends, Kei went up a mini-break at 4-2*. Roger then got the mini-break back to level at 4 all. Then, an error from Nishikori gave Roger a mini-break again, this time on his own serve. An un-returnable serve from Roger brought up match-point and then a Nishikori error sealed the deal. Or so we all thought! After that point, the Maestro did a little fistpump and then jogged back to the baseline, ready to receive Kei’s serve! Ummmm… Roger dear, the match is over! He was so focused that he totally lost count and thought the match was still going on! Then he saw Kei laughing, his box laughing, (yes Severin was actually laughing) and the crowd cheering and realized what had happened 🙂 Here is the hilarious clip that will be watched by his grandchildren on his 90th birthday 😀

Here are the highlights, the presser clip, the presser transcript and the match stats.CaptureI thought Roger played at a much higher level than his first match. He served and volleyed quite a lot and most of the time, it paid off. He knew Kei prefers some rhythm to his matches and these short net points threw the Japanese star off his game. Roger glided on the grass this match displaying that natural ability that he has for this surface. Kei held his own for the most part, especially the second set. But Roger was able to play well on the big points and reminded us of Vintage Federer as he grabbed the win by the collar at the right time. This was his 1,178 career match and 956th career match win. He is now in his 118th career final and 9th Halle final.

Roger FedererUp next is Colombian player Alejandro Falla. Despite a H2H of 6-0 in Roger’s favour, Falla is not a player to be underestimated. He is a lefty who plays aggressive tennis and likes fast surfaces. He has given Roger plenty of trouble in the past. He took a set off him in the London Olympics in 2012 and had a 2 set to love lead in Wimbledon in 2010 causing palpitations in the hearts of millions till Roger was able to win it in 5. Falla has nothing to lose in this final and every win he had this week was well-earned. He displayed nerves of steel to win the SFs and is not in awe of Federer in any way. He knows he has a chance. In his presser he said he would prefer to play Roger over Kei. So yes, I will be rocking back and forth with nerves when play gets underway.

Meanwhile, back to yesterday, within 40 minutes of his singles win over Kei, he was back on court again playing the doubles SF with his childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli. And guess what? He’s in the doubles final too! The singles final will be held today at 3pm local time followed by the doubles final after suitable rest. How wonderful it would be if he won both! It’s the stuff dreams are made of so let me have this for the next few hours please! 🙂 Good luck for both finals today Roger!

  1. Thank you for another great match summary! If Roger wins, your recaps make part of my celebration; if he loses, they help me understand what happened. But they’re also extremely valuable when I missed the match in question, and I enjoy them much more than any ATP or tournament-website recaps. Simply: you give more details yet without exaggerating, you add vital remarks on his game, often from a wider perspective, and you keep impressing me with the lively and professional language. And of course I share your viewpoint 🙂

I’m so, sooo happy about Roger’s wins yesterday! Thanks to your information about Falla I’ll be better prepared for today’s battle, but I’ll hope it will go Roger’s way. See you rocking back and forth! ❤

    • Thanks for commenting Weronika! I always love your comments although I am blushing a bit 😉 Glad I can get my message across! I am not a writer and never wrote anything meant to be read publicly before this blog. So I still get nervous after posting my write-ups even though I’ve been doing this blog for over a year! I’m still amazed that I have been able to articulate my thoughts and very touched that I found fellow fans who feel the same. I love this connection I can share with others who understand my obsession in the same way 🙂 You are one of those very precious people so it’s always wonderful to receive any comments by you!

I am very happy with the win from yesterday. I am especially proud given that Kei had won their past two matches. That must have been a bit of a mental challenge too I am sure, at some level. But he stayed focused and got the job done, thankfully in straight sets! Falla will not be an easy customer at all so yes, we’ll be rocking back and forth! Hope you get to watch the match! 🙂

      • Oh, you deserve every word of praise for this blog. I’ve just read “Redemption” — what a brilliant post! I regret I didn’t comment on your final post from Roland Garros; it was very touching and very fitting, I thought. While I was terribly sad, it helped me process my thoughts, just as many other posts of you had done before. So the connection is there clearly (if I may use Roger’s favourite word).

Indeed, the win being against Kei is another source of joy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this Falla guy and you’ve made me wary, but most of all I’m excited. Yes, thankfully I will be able to watch today, for the last time before I sign off for two weeks. Sob, a terrible sob… I’ll miss most of Wimbledon and the WC! Yet I trust Roger will do his best and let me see him still kicking grass when I’m back. You have to cheer for him with double strength, will you? And I’ll pop up whenever I’ll get the chance 🙂

      • Thank you again, for your wonderful words! The connection is definitely there 🙂 Didn’t mean to make you too weary of Falla, wanted to alert people that just because his ranking is low does not mean he will be a push-over, there is a reason he’s in the final. Basically I guess I wanted to point out he should not be underestimated. I’m sure Roger is more than aware of him and where his strengths and weaknesses lie.

Interesting that you liked the ‘Redemption’ post. I enjoyed writing it and was filled with hope only for the disaster that was the US Open to ruin it all. As such, I didn’t go back to that post again. But I loved writing it and for that special match, I truly felt we were transported back to 2006-2007 when Fedal matches crackled with electricity and excitement. You could feel the magic of that match, even through the laptop screen. It was one of their best matches in recent memory 🙂 Thank you for mentioning that post again, it made me smile too 🙂

But back to the present, I didn’t know you will be missing out on Wimbledon! 😦 Will you be able to check scores or totally going off the grid? 😦 Well hopefully Roger will be there in the 2nd week of Wimby waiting for you 🙂 Meanwhile, do say hi when you get the chance!

      • I think I received your warnings concerning Falla quite the way you meant them: don’t expect an easy ride. And I’m sure Maestro will know better than to underestimate his opponent.

Yes, this hope and joy at seeing an even Fedal match again are what makes the post particularly touching. I wish I had seen it. But out of curiosity I’ve just went through the recap of his last US Open match that year and, well, almost a year later, in the middle of 2014, you get me rather tearful. So that’s that about your ability to get the message across.

I’m leaving tonight for Israel, for a two-week trip/visit. The timing is terrible, but I had no other choice when the decision was taken. Now the reasons for the timing are no more valid and I’m really torn. I’ll do my best to enjoy the trip anyway and get hold of some Wi-Fi as often as possible, which might be every day or twice in two weeks’ time — no idea. No chance to watch anything, though, that’s quite sure 😦

But today I can still enjoy watching Roger play, and hopefully lift a trophy or two 😉 My heart is always with him and the entire FedFam in any case, no matter where I am ❤

      • You were totally his good luck charm today then! Hope he’s still in Wimbledon when you come back so you can see him! Meanwhile, good luck for your trip! And thank you once again for your wonderful words, YOU get me tearful! :’) *hugs*
